Not just an option: Interpreting as an essential component of safe maternity and neonatal care

In this insight report, carried out by Sands and Tommy’s Maternity Consortium, we examine the systemic issues impacting access to language interpreting provision within maternity and neonatal care. This research, which aligns with the NHS England Community Languages Improvement Framework, includes insights on British Sign Language and other community languages, and is based on engagement with women and birthing people, healthcare staff, interpreters, and Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations.

Our findings indicate that professional interpreting is a safety-critical component of care and should not be optional. The report documents how inconsistent practices, fragmented provision, and a lack of clear national guidance can compromise communication and informed consent, particularly during critical points of care.

The report concludes with recommendations for national policymakers and healthcare services to address these barriers and promote equitable care.
